MATERIAL RESOURCES
The Faculty of Civil Engineering displays its education and research activities in two main locations (124 Mamaia Blvd. and 22BUnirii Street). Worth taking into account it is the fact that the Department of Construction owns its own headquarters (22BUnirii street), which in addition to classrooms, seminar and laboratory space has a secretariat, a library and offices for all teachers.
In addition to their own classrooms, the Faculty of Civil Engineering has access to two other university common rooms (Aula Magna with 316 seats and A0-125 seats) as well as collaborative spaces for optional disciplines of the training program. The seminar rooms are endowed with technical equipment for learning and communication that facilitates the work of the teacher and student receptivity; the research laboratories have the proper equipments and operation means. The faculty has licensed software such as Allplan and SCIA.
Laboratories
The Faculty of Civil Engineering has modern laboratories equipped with latest equipment/ technologies. Here are the laboratories:
1. Fluid Mechanics and Hydraulics Laboratory
2. Hydraulic Machines Laboratory
3. Building Materials Laboratory
4. Strength of Materials Laboratory
5. Concrete Laboratory
6. Geology Laboratory
7. Geotechnical and Foundations Laboratory
8. Laboratory for testing materials by means of destructive and nondestructive methods
9. Computer Aided Design Laboratory
The material facilities of the laboratories are relatively good, there is a continuing concern for enrichment, diversification and purchasing advanced equipment in order to avoid obsolescence and ensure high standard training activities for our students.
The Geotechnical Laboratory of the Faculty of Civil Engineering within Ovidius University of Constanta, was founded in 1977 within the Institute of Subengineers. The laboratory is organized to perform necessary tests and check-ups to ensure the quality control of the construction and building materials used. The competitiveness of the lab is based on the professional competence of the staff, the modern equipment of high technical level, rigorous technique for testing complying with all documents and legislative requirements. Laboratory aims at improving the quality according to the international requirements, by tests carried out according to the national and international regulations in force.
In this lab we perform the following determinations:
- For the GTF field:
• sampling
• organic matter,
• humidity,
• skeleton lands,
• density soils,
• limits of plasticity,
• granulometric composition,
• permeability,
• compaction characteristics, PROCTOR trying,
• Bulk weight,
• strength land by direct shearing
• single axial compression,
• diagram of compaction, compression and consolidation,
• water holding capacity by diffusion-suction lands,
• the degree of compaction
- for the ANCFD field:
• fractions containing 0 …. 0.09 mm chippings,
• Deval car usage,
• density and volumetric weight,
• bulk density of the source rock,
bulk weight,
• cutting specimens.
The masterpiece of the laboratory is the installation of three-axial compression. This facility is a “imposed strain-measured stress” and is produced by ELE INTERNATIONAL. This installation is automatic with optional automatic measurement of parameters during control efforts determination.
The three-axial automated installation of the Geotechnical Laboratory within OvidiusUniversity uses a 1120 SCXI plate chassis for signal conditioning and a data acquisition board of PCI-MIO-type 16-bit canas/12 mounted on a PCI port on your computer. This chain of measurement and data acquisition is manufactured by the U.S. NATIONAL INSTRUMENT .
Measurement and control system consists of the following components:
• LabVIEW Starter Kit for Windows/PCI-6023 that contains:
1. Software acquisition, analysis and data processing LabVIEW;
2. Data acquisition card PCI-MIO 16-channel / 12-bit;
3. NI-DAQ 6.9 software drivers;
4. Signals connection block CB-68 LP;
• Presentation software and mathematical analysis, HiQ for Windows.
• Chassis with 4 signal conditioning slots SCXI 1000 / Euro 220V c.a
• The 4-channel amplifier with galvanic insulation and independent excitation sources, type 1121 SCXI
• Terminal block for bridges extent SCXI 1321 type
• signal coupling assembly, 1349 SCXI type
Due to the endowment with the already mentioned equipment and to the highly qualified personnel, the Geotechnical Testing Laboratory within the Faculty of Civil Engineering may perform tests to determine common geotechnical parameters, and special research testing. It should be noted that in this laboratory special tests that have been the subject of several doctoral theses were conducted.
For the teaching of Computer Aided Engineering, the Faculty of Civil Engineering has two laboratories, one of 42m2 and 20 seats (20 computers) and one of 40m2 and 15 seats (15 computers). These laboratories are equipped with licensed software for: ALLPLAN, Windows XP, COSMOS M, Nessus, Office 2003, SCIA / ESA.
The laboratory for materials strength and reinforced concrete is 55m2 and has 25 seats. The equipment consists of:
• hydraulic universal testing machine, WE60 Jinan type (China) with a maximum compressive load of 600 kN;
• hydraulic universal testing machine Tecnotest F050/TC type (Italy) with a full load:
to compression: 2000 kN
to tensile/ stretching: 500 kN
• Charpy pendulum hammer for the shock bend testing of materials, Wuchung JB 30 A type (China) (Maximum Impact 30 kg / m)
The building materials laboratory contains among others: a planetary mixer, a shock table, a mixer, scales, an electric oven with a thermostat, technical balance, air occlusive device, Vicat apparatus with accessories, an apparatus for determining concrete permeability, vibrating table, Richardson penetrometer, universal press for mechanical tests, laboratory oven, etc. The facilities of construction materials laboratory allow all laboratory work provided in the syllabus.
The laboratory for non-destructive tests on concrete has acquired equipment through funds allocated under the AMTRANS program: pahometre, betonoscop, sclerometer, sound level meter, thermometer.
The topography lab has theodolites, levels, planimetric, surveyor’s rod and technical documentation necessary to carry out surveying activities.
The laboratories with the proper equipment are an essential element for the elaboration of bachelor thesis. The diversity and complexity of students’ work prove the functionality and efficiency of the laboratories we have.
